Spider-Man’s Dark Web has just drawn Mary Jane and Black Cat into the midst of Marvel’s most dangerous heist – and they just might pull it off.
When Ben Reilly and Madelyne Pryor unleashed their demonic forces on New York, its heroes found themselves facing an onslaught of otherwise inanimate objects. During their attempt to escape the chaos, Mary Jane and Felicia Hardy, better known as Black Cat, were pulled from limbo by an unseen force. Now the two have come face to face with the man-turned-demon who led them to hell, and the only way to make it out alive is to pull off the biggest heist of all time.
Dark Web: Mary Jane and the Black Cat #2 (by VC’s Jed MacKay, Vincenzo Carratú, Brian Reber, and Ariana Maher) finds the eponymous duo thoughtfully appreciating the beautiful things life in Limbo has to offer. Courtesy of their host, Belasco. As the villain explains, he’s more than happy to return Mary Jane and Black Cat to Earth unharmed, but only after acquiring an all-important item in his name. It turns out that Belasco has developed a burning desire for his Soulsword, and there’s simply no one better at stealing lost items than Felicia Hardy. That’s even though she’ll have to race against the forces of Earth, Heven, and Hell in the process.
Mary Jane and Black Cat work for Marvel’s sneakiest demon
It’s no surprise that Belasco is so desperate to get his Soulsword back. When Belasco first appeared in Bruce Jones and Brent Anderson Ka-Zar the Savage #1, he only held a fraction of his current power as he had only just been released from hundreds of years of confinement. After his defeat at the hands of Ka-Zar, Belasco found himself in limbo, where he quickly set out to make a name for himself as a conqueror. Of course, that won’t last long thanks to intrusions from Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik, and Madelyne Pryor, though the former’s introduction gave her some big ideas for expanding her grip on Limbo as a whole.
Magik’s Soulsword has been an icon in its own right since its introduction in 1983 Weird X-Men #171 (by Chris Claremont and Walt Simonson). Forged from Illyana’s own life energy, the Soulsword is both a weapon and a conduit through which a magic user can hone and focus their abilities. Of all the people in the Marvel Universe, none know this better than Belasco. It seems that long before the days of Magik, Belasco himself wielded a soulsword in his initial attempt to claim Limbo, only to be snatched away by the forces of Eldritch after claiming his throne. As devastating as that loss may have been, it’s probably for the best, just as it could also be for the best that Belasco recovers it in the present day.
Mary Jane and Black Cat’s Heist Could Save the World
Mary Jane and Black Cat are definitely in for one of the toughest fights of their lives, but that doesn’t make their mission any less important. Going up against angels, demons, and rogue Hydra agents won’t be easy, but if they succeed, they’ll have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that there’s no one more capable than the two of them. Not only that, but Mary Jane and Black Cat might even find themselves responsible for effectively saving the world, at least from a demonic threat.
If Belasco gets his hands on his Soulsword, he’ll be a more powerful version of himself than readers have ever seen. This would put him in a prime position to dismantle the machinations of Madelyne Pryor and Ben Reilly and usurp the former’s throne as Queen of Limbo. Then again, this kind of shakeup would surely have major implications for the rest of the Marvel Universe, including Mary Jane and Black Cat. Considering they’re now officially on Belasco’s radar, they might even be drawn into another scheme by the demon, especially if they make this one a success.
