Elusive leopard cat specimen added to PMNH collection


ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) has added a newly discovered specimen of an elusive endangered leopard cat to its collection, which will be a source of attraction for wildlife lovers and researchers.

Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), a small cat belonging to the Felidae family, was found dead on the 76th National Road heading towards Murree in Islamabad late Wednesday night, December 14, 2022.

Wildlife lover and Pakistani Parliamentary Service Institute official Rana Muhammad Riaz found the specimen dead and reported the incident to Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH).

A team under the supervision of Muhammad Asif Khan, Curator of the Zoological Sciences Division of the PMNH, approached Rana Muhammad Riaz to receive the specimen and immediately transferred it to the PMNH.
The leopard cat is listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List, it usually ventures out at night to look for food and water.

According to a study, 46.6% of road accidents in Potohar Plateau occur in and around Rawalpindi.
National Route 76 has dense green cover on both sides and the area is rich in wild flora and fauna.

For the currently reported road kills of ecologically significant wildlife, it is mandatory to post wildlife signs along the road to raise public awareness and minimize such incidence in the future.

Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) Islamabad was established in 1976, under the patronage of Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan. The PMNH has four divisions, namely Botanical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Zoological Sciences, and Utilities.

The former three divisions are engaged in the activities of collection, preservation, identification and research related to the plant, animal, fossil, rock and mineral resources of Pakistan, while the latter is responsible for public education through the through dioramas, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, seminars, posters and film screenings, etc.

PMNH also provides consulting and advisory services to public and private sector organizations.
