Jackson County Animal Shelter is offering reduced adoption fees for dogs and cats through December in an effort to free up space at the shelter and bring animals home for the holidays.

The reduced “Home for the Pawlidays” fee on all dogs and cats 6 months and older is achieved through sponsorship from Lithia Motors, according to the animal shelter.

Dog adoption fees have been reduced from $150 to $50; cat adoption fee reduced from $60 to $20.

Residents of Jackson County must also pay an annual license fee of $25 per dog. Discounts are available for veterans, seniors 62 and older, and anyone purchasing a multi-year license. All standard applications, reviews, and adoption processes remain in effect.

Like other shelters across the country, the one in Jackson County takes in so many animals that it is continually at capacity. The nonprofit Friends of the Animal Shelter covered the costs of several weekends of reduced adoption fees over the past few months, but kennels continued to fill up almost immediately, according to the animal shelter.

With financial assistance from Lithia Motor, Friends of the Animal Sanctuary and the shelter are able to provide a full month of low-cost adoptions in December. The partnership gives all animals, including newer additions, a much better chance of being seen and adopted sooner, the animal shelter said.

Once you see an animal you’re interested in, call for an appointment Tuesday through Thursday, as no walk-ins are allowed on those days. No appointment is necessary during shelter hours Friday through Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. No adoptions can take place after 3:30 p.m. to ensure processing is completed on time.

Once there, an adoption counselor will meet with potential adopters to discuss their adoption plans. Adopters must complete an application, and staff will review and process it as usual.

Anyone who already owns one or more dogs must bring their dogs with them. A meeting with the adoptable dog is necessary before the adoption.

Jackson County Animal Shelter is located at 5595 S. Pacific Highway, also known as Highway 99, between Phoenix and Talent. To make an appointment, call 541-774-6654. The refuge is closed on Mondays and Christmas Day.
