Marvel fans are celebrating the impending arrival of Spider-Cat in Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Cat will make its theatrical debut in Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse and Marvel fans couldn’t be happier.
Sony recently released the first poster for 2018’s upcoming anime sequel Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, showing Miles Morales among a sea of Spider-People. Fans have since taken to social media to report familiar spiders, with Spider-Cat being the latest to stir up excitement for the film. First appearance in 2011 Spider-Island: I love New York City #1, Spider-Cat was a crime-fighting pet cat for a group of video game enthusiasts, who gained their powers from the Spider Totem. He returned for Marvel Comics’ “Edge of Spider-Verse” storyline in 2014, heroically dying in amazing spider man #7. An alternate version of Spider-Cat appeared in the 2020 PlayStation 5 video game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Another Spider-Man should appear in Through the Spider-Verse that makes fans scream is the 2008 cartoon version The spectacular Spider-Man. While some were initially hesitant to believe that Spider-Man was really the one from the 2008 cartoon, the film’s co-writer Christopher Miller confirmed that it was indeed the fan-favorite Spectacular Spider-Man. However, Greg Weisman, who served as showrunner on The spectacular Spider-Man, attempted to temper fans’ excitement over the character’s inclusion, writing on Twitter, “Confirmation that SpecSpidey is in the poster is not the same as confirmation that he is in the movie. Not to mention how he might be treated in said movie.” At that time, Miller or anyone else associated with Through the Spider-Verse hasn’t confirmed if the poster will be the first and last time fans will see the Spectacular Spider-Man in the spider worms movies.
Miles Morales comes into conflict with the Spider-Force
Through the Spider-Verse will pick up sometime after the events of the 2018 film and follow Miles Morales – now a bit older and wiser – as he ventures into the multiverse with Gwen Stacy. This journey will lead them to the Spider-Force, the Spider-People tasked with protecting the multiverse who are led by Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099. However, when a new threat with the power to open interdimensional portals emerges and threatens the multiverse, Miles finds himself at odds with the Spider-Force over how to handle the threat, with the film’s first trailer showing Miles and Spider-Man 2099 locked in battle against each other.
Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson and Oscar Isaac reprise their voice roles from the first film as Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Peter B. Parker and Spider-Man 2099, with Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez also returning in as parents of Miles. new actors for Through the Spider-Verse include Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Jason Schwartzman as Jonathan Ohnn/Spot, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, and Shea Whigham as George Stacy.
Directed by the trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse hits theaters June 2, 2023.
