PEOPLE find out that Hello Kitty isn’t really a cat.
An SNL skit that aired last weekend revealed what the iconic character really was and people are still trying to figure it out.

In the skit, Hello Kitty store managers attempt to train new employees, starting by providing some background on Sanrio’s character.
“If you open page five of your employee handbooks, you’ll see a list of facts about Hello Kitty,” one of the managers said.
“As you can see, she loves baking cookies, she goes to school, and she’s not a cat, she’s a little human girl.”
“No…why did you say Hello Kitty was a little human girl,” asked one of the trainees.

People first thought the skit was a joke, but it turns out to be the truth.
When Christine R. Yano, a University of Hawaii anthropologist, was preparing for her exhibit at the National Japanese American Museum, she was rudely awakened by Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty.
Christine had very firmly believed that Hello Kitty was a cat – until Sanrio harshly corrected her.
“It’s a correction that Sanrio made to my script for the show,” she told the LA Times.
“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She is a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She is never depicted on all fours .”
“She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does, however, have her own pet cat, and his name is Charmmy Kitty.”
Going even further, Hello Kitty, contrary to popular belief, is not Japanese.
She’s actually British and was born in 1974 as well as a perpetual third year student, making her probably the oldest third year ever at 48.

She lives outside of London. She is Scorpio. Oh, and her full name is Kitty White, daughter of George and Mary White.
Same weirdernot only is she a human child who dresses like a cat and owns a pet cat, but she too has a boyfriend named Cher Daniel… who is a real cat.
People were shocked, flabbergasted and outright denied by the news.
“This is my childhood. What next? Mickey Mouse isn’t a mouse either?” asked a viewer.

“Vets hate her for this simple trick,” another joked.
“I refuse to believe it’s a furry one, it’s a cat,” said a third.
