ATTLEBORO – A fire at a house in Mayhew Road late Friday morning killed a pet cat and displaced seven people.
The fire at 61 Mayhew Road started in the basement and was extinguished in about 20 minutes by firefighters, said district fire chief David Charest.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire, reported around 11:30 a.m., remains under investigation.
Occupants of the home called 911 after noticing smoke in the basement, Charest said.
Firefighters contained the blaze to the basement, but the rest of the house was damaged by smoke.
Although a pet cat died, other pets were able to get out of the house, Charest said.
The American Red Cross was helping the residents.
Firefighters remained at the scene near North Main Street for approximately two hours to carry out overhaul operations. The basement was partially finished and other parts were used for storage, said Mr. Charest.
Firefighters from North Attleboro, Norton and Mansfield assisted the fire department in covering the city’s fire stations. Providence Canteen offered rehabilitation services to firefighters.
